It’s worth using fresh turmeric and ginger to make this drink—both are often stocked at Whole Foods or Asian and Indian grocers. Ground spices will work, but the medicinal properties will be diminished and the texture less silky smooth.

Ingredients

Makes 1

½

cup coconut milk

1

tablespoon date sugar or 2 teaspoons raw sugar

4

teaspoons freshly grated turmeric or 1 teaspoon ground turmeric

1

teaspoon freshly grated ginger or ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder or ground nutmeg

Pinch of kosher salt

Preparation

  1. Whisk coconut milk, sugar, turmeric, ginger, five-spice, salt, and ¾ cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let mixture steep 5 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a mug and serve.

  • So tasty for a cold, wintry afternoon! If you ran out of coconut milk (we wanted another serving and didn't have enough) we cut ours with some milk. Still excellent.
